Ipe deck sanding and surface preparation — professional equipment

Ipe Deck Sanding

Precision sanding to remove weathering, failed products, and surface damage from Ipe — done right with the correct equipment.

Why Ipe Sanding Requires Specialists

Ipe is one of the hardest woods in the world — roughly 3,680 on the Janka hardness scale, compared to around 1,290 for red oak. Sanding Ipe requires professional-grade equipment capable of cutting through that density without burning the wood, creating uneven surfaces, or leaving cross-grain scratches that are nearly impossible to remove.

We regularly restore decks that were damaged by contractors who used standard floor sanders, wrong grits, or improper technique on Ipe. These mistakes — visible as swirl marks, uneven surfaces, or raised grain — require additional corrective sanding to fix, adding cost and time. Using the right equipment from the start is always less expensive.

When Is Sanding Necessary?

  • ✓Significant gray oxidation that cleaning and brightening cannot fully address
  • ✓Failed film-forming sealers, paints, or stains that need to be removed
  • ✓Visible surface damage, deep scratches, or uneven areas
  • ✓Raised grain or fuzzing from improper pressure washing
  • ✓Contamination from incompatible products that cannot be cleaned off
  • ✓Correcting damage from previous improper sanding

Our Sanding Process

1

Assessment

We evaluate the deck to determine the appropriate grit sequence and sanding approach. The starting grit depends on the severity of weathering and the type of contamination present.

2

Equipment Setup

We use professional belt sanders and orbital sanders designed for hardwood decking. The equipment is calibrated for Ipe's density to ensure consistent material removal without burning or gouging.

3

Progressive Sanding

Sanding proceeds through a sequence of grits, moving from coarser to finer to remove weathering and create a smooth, uniform surface. We sand with the grain throughout.

4

Brightening

After sanding, the deck is treated with a wood brightener to neutralize the wood's pH and prepare it for optimal oil penetration.

5

Finishing

Professional hardwood oil is applied to the freshly sanded surface. Sanded Ipe absorbs oil more readily than weathered wood, resulting in deeper penetration and longer-lasting protection.

What Can Go Wrong

Improper sanding is one of the most common causes of Ipe deck damage we see. Using the wrong equipment leaves swirl marks and cross-grain scratches that are extremely difficult to remove from Ipe's dense surface. Sanding too aggressively removes more wood than necessary, shortening the deck's lifespan. Using too fine a grit on heavily weathered wood fails to remove the oxidized layer. We have corrected all of these mistakes — but it is always better and less expensive to do it right the first time.
