About Florida Deck Refurbishing

Ipe Deck Restoration & Refinishing Specialists

Welcome to Florida Deck Refurbishing, specialists in Ipe deck restoration, refinishing, and exotic hardwood care. For over 20 years, we have focused exclusively on restoring weathered Ipe decks and hardwood exterior surfaces for residential and commercial properties across Florida and select coastal markets.

If you’re searching for Ipe deck restoration in Miami, Ipe deck refinishing in Fort Lauderdale, or a proven contractor to restore a weathered Ipe deck anywhere in Florida, you’re in the right place.

Why Ipe Decks Require Specialized Restoration

Ipe is a premium exotic hardwood originating from South America and is widely regarded as one of the most durable decking materials available. Its extremely dense grain structure makes it naturally resistant to:

  • Rot and decay
  • Termites and insects
  • Moisture and harsh weather conditions

Because of these qualities, properly installed and maintained Ipe decks can last for decades. However, preserving Ipe’s natural color in Florida’s climate is challenging. Intense UV exposure, humidity, rain, and salt air cause untreated Ipe to weather into dark gray or black tones over time.

This weathering does not mean your deck has failed — it means it needs professional Ipe deck restoration.

Common Problems With Improper Ipe Deck Refinishing

Many property owners struggle with Ipe deck maintenance because the wood is often treated incorrectly. Common issues include:

  • Inferior or incorrect products being used
  • Oils over-applied or applied to wet wood
  • Aggressive pressure washing that damages the surface
  • Sanding skipped or performed improperly

These mistakes frequently result in blotchy color, slippery surfaces, accelerated fading, or permanent surface damage. Ipe is unforgiving when refinished incorrectly — which is why experience matters.

Our Proven Ipe Deck Restoration Process

At Florida Deck Refurbishing, we follow a controlled, professional process designed specifically for Ipe and other exotic hardwood decks. No shortcuts. No guesswork.

Step 1: Deep Cleaning

We begin with a proprietary hardwood-safe cleaning process that removes surface dirt, oxidation, UV damage, mold, mildew, organic buildup, and failed coatings.

Step 2: Drying Period

After cleaning, the deck is allowed to dry completely. Rushing this step traps moisture and compromises the refinishing process.

Step 3: Sanding (When Required)

When necessary, sanding is performed to remove remaining surface contamination, expose healthy wood fibers, and smooth raised grain and wear patterns.

Step 4: Brightening

The deck is brightened to restore Ipe’s natural tone and balance the wood’s pH, preparing the surface for oil absorption.

Step 5: Ipe-Specific Oil Application

We apply Ipe-specific oils only, enhancing the wood’s natural color, providing UV protection, and allowing the deck to breathe — unlike film-forming coatings that peel or fail in Florida’s climate.

Real Ipe Deck Restoration Results

The project shown on this page is a recent Ipe deck restoration completed in South Florida. The deck had been left untreated for several years and developed dark gray and black discoloration due to weathering, mold, and oxidation.

Using our professional restoration process, the deck was returned to a rich, natural hardwood finish — without replacing boards.

How Often Should an Ipe Deck Be Refinished?

There is no one-size-fits-all schedule. Proper Ipe deck maintenance depends on the deck’s microclimate, including:

  • Sun exposure
  • Proximity to water
  • Foot traffic
  • Shade and airflow

In Florida, refinishing is typically performed as visually needed, not on a rigid calendar. We help clients determine the correct maintenance interval based on real conditions — not generic timelines.
